Behind the Horror, a death / thrash metal duo formed by brothers Gabriel (guitar) and Lucas (drums) Alves, have released a video for their song ‘Wrath’ from their EP entitled …And the Horror Begins. And so the horror does begin with this song, but in the best way, in that way where us freaks feel excited, intrigued, almost giddy, by horror paraphernalia.
The video is simple in itself, the whole thing shot from a drum-cam allowing Lucas to show off his skills on the e-drumkit. Admittedly there is an unfortunate reputation for synth drums not being as good or authentic to rock music as real drum kits, and yet this argument is absolutely flattened here, with the drums sounding beautifully authentic and wonderfully atmospheric. This, paired with the electric guitar over the top, leads to an absolute banger of a song. Gabriel, wielding the electric guitar, plays a tune that feels infectious, as if that very electricity is coursing through your veins, mixing with your bloodstream.
The lyrics themselves evoke that classic dark religious atmosphere that is often associated with heavy metal music. We are threatened with facing the ‘wrath of god’ and, yet, if this is playing in the background when the time comes to face Him, at least we’ll be having a bloody good time. The various tempos of the song lend themselves to what can only be described as the perfect metal song to be performed live. Moments of super upbeat rhythm, moments designed for some intense headbanging and moshing, contrasted with slightly slower moments allowing for one to catch a breath, ‘Wrath’ screams to be experienced live.
