BASEMENT LEAGUE - 'Rein Me In' | Single Review

Calling time on a relationship is never easy, regardless of who it’s with. Arguably, the hardest relationship to end is with a version of yourself you no longer want to be. Entwining both and wrapping it with a pop-punk bow, London based Basement League deliver hard hitting new single ‘Rein Me In’ on May 7.

The five piece; Cameron Percival (vocals), Izaak Rushton (vocals/rhythm guitar), Ryan Phillips (lead guitar), James Warner (bass), and Nathan Coote (drums) lift ‘Rein Me In’ from their debut EP Better Nights // Better Days slated for a June 11 release. A light, melodic guitar overlay classic to the genre crashes through a delectably dark intro. “Never know the rain could make me smile” encapsulates the relief cutting ties sometimes brings. The way Percival and Rushton’s vocals trade blows flawlessly mirror the chaotic dual processing we put ourselves through by weighing the pros and cons of staying in a relationship that’s overshot its course.

Pent up emotions burst from their infected pustules, driving the frantic energies of the chorus.

Tapping into the wealth of their pop-punk influences, Basement League’s choruses are contagious and worth being echoed by an abundance of fans in an arena setting. Hearing a crowd come together under the universal sentiment of “hopelessly searching” and feeling “broken again” would be a magical sound.

‘Rein Me In’ is brash in its emotional honesty which is why the soft guitar and vocal driven

interlude fits so well. Vulnerability and its many different faces comes easily to Basement League. Unafraid to show the face we reserve only for ourselves; “go outside and face the day or stay inside and slowly waste away” is necessarily harsh. Opening the floodgates with just one line brings in a powerfully heavy breakdown worthy of comparison to While She Sleeps.

‘Rein Me In’ marks a new era for Basement League. Armed with this change in direction, the band are fearless when it comes to wearing their tattered hearts on their sleeves. While this isn’t an entirely new concept, there is something raw and genuine at play. With Better Nights // Better Days on the horizon, it’ll be interesting to see how far Basement League are willing to go in baring their souls for the world to hear.

‘Rein Me In’ is available to pre-save across all major streaming platforms now before its release on May 7th. The debut EP Better Nights // Better Days is due for release on June 11.
