ASK CAROL - 'Darkest Hour' (Single)

Officially forming in 2016, Norwegian alt-rock duo Ask Carol, made up of Ask (drums, guitar, keyboard, and sampling) and Carol (vocals, guitar, bass, and percussion) released their self-titled EP in 2018 and have a full length album slated for release in 2021. The first single from this album, and their third of 2020, comes in the form of ‘Darkest Hour’.

Taking a notably darker turn from previous effort ‘Do It In LA’, ‘Darkest Hour’ is a slick and scintillating anthem about anxiety and depression. Speaking for the masses with a melancholic soul, the passion in Carol’s voice as she confesses ‘There’s a child inside this monster hidden away’ is undeniable. The sexy, velvet tones of her voice are captivating as they simmer through the verses, bolstered by Carol’s bluesy bassline and Ask’s pulsating beat.

The song comes to a rolling boil with the cry ‘In my deepest darkest hour, where do I go’. The rich and airy Nora Jones vibe to Carol’s voice becomes more akin to Lynn Gunn’s raw power. As the swell of the synths softly punctuate the chorus, the audible vulnerability that can be heard in the line ‘Like the devil on my shoulder won’t leave me alone’ will strike a chord with anyone who has felt the black dog of depression stalking them.

As the song reaches climax, it’s pulled from the brink, returning to its smooth sensuality. Soft moans of the chorus caress the senses, leading into a spine tingling melancholic guitar solo from Ask which is simply sublime. Considering how full the song sounds, you’d be forgiven for thinking there are more than two members. Ask Carol, like Royal Blood and Twenty One Pilots before them, are a shining example of less is definitely more.
