Shrouded in mystery, revelling in anonymity, longing to emerge from the veil of the shadow play. Only one of those is true when it concerns Danish rock n’ roll duo Angstskríg. Considering their new single is titled ‘Skyggespil’ is Danish for ‘shadow play’, the powers of deduction lead us to the exposé of nothing except for the ‘Skyggespil’.
Following from debut single ‘Lucifer Kalder’, Angstskríg take us on a brooding, introspective ‘hunt for truth that will set us free’. Shadows are cast against the backdrop of deeply atmospheric guitars and pounding drums, the pace of our play dictated by an imposing bass line. The vocals sound something like the summoning of a darker power, but the ‘spiritual standstill on the knife’s edge’ being referred to urges us to divert from the path of darkness and bathe our spiritual selves in the light.
Succulently lavish tolling of bells give the tapestry of ‘Skyggespil’ undertones of gothic eeriness. A meandering guitar solo is birthed from the creepiness, the notes ringing like the maternal tones of the bells. An interruption of synapse stimulating drums leads to sinister singular guitar work, creating an aggressive undertow for where the resplendent bass line becomes to interim nidus.
The melodic guitar solo showcases impeccable string manipulation, causing our ears to prick and scrub back a few seconds to take in Attila Vörös’ (of Satyricon, Sanctuary, Týr and Nevermore) artistry. Cries of ‘step into the light’ settle between Vörös’ virtuosity, the two entities representing the choice of whether to step into the light or forever be consumed by the skyggespil.
