Scandinavian countries have been synonymous with dark, demonic, and devilish culture for centuries, none more so than in their music. Creeping in the shadows behind the likes of Kvelertak, Entombed, and Mayhem, and rising from the ashes of burnt churches emerges Danish duo Angstskrig, their vacant and expressionless anonymity heightening their peculiarity and allure.
The talented twosome’s debut single, ‘Lucifer Kalder,’ is a hybrid of blazing black metal tones and subdued classic metal riffs, the black n’ roll result being a testament to those that have walked the scorching remains of various paths before them. Translating to ‘Lucifer is calling’ in Danish, the band embrace their fiendishly rotting roots with occultist lyrical themes and imagery as the single is plucked from the bands upcoming album titled ‘Skyggespil’, translating to ‘shadow play.’
Soaked in classic rock chugging guitars, the opening of the track dances with the devil teasing one foot in hell and one on the charred earth, as the upbeat musicality poses as an undisturbed listening experience that’s hung in a cleverly disguised ruse. The lyric: “your faith in Satan is strong, he dictates your reality with the threat of eternal pain,” certifies that this band aren’t messing around and that you’d be an ignorant fool to believe otherwise.
Strained and pained vocals surface between over-fuzzed guitars and drums, and a demonic bass break down buzzes beneath a squealing guitar solo played by Kreator and Dragonforce guitarist Frédéric Leclercq.
The guest appearance confirms Angstskrig’s hypnotic enchantment, showcasing just enough cards in their hand and keeping a few still close to their chests.
‘Lucifer Kalder’ is out now on all streaming platforms, ‘Skyggespil’ is due for release in early 2021.
