The last few moments of a relationship are brutal. There’s no two ways about it. When all the cards are left face up on the table, a scorching sadness fills every cavity of the body. Brisbane based All Hours hold us for just a few more minutes with the bittersweet ‘Before I Go’.
Taken from their Perspectives EP, ‘Before I Go’ circumvents pop-punk traditions, opting for a softer piano and acoustic guitar led track. Dani O’Grady’s vocals are heartbreakingly soulful. Picking at the bones of the relationship, “I felt the sickness creeping in” tugs at the pit of our stomach. The simple yet emotionally complex piano melody sparks an intensity that can only come from a place of hurt.
Male vocals introduce the second half of the union. The harmonies are sweet in their lament. All Hours take us on an understates roller-coaster ride as the picked guitar melody conflicts then compliments the piano from one moment to the next. “We built it up then tore down each spire” has castles of glass collapsing in on themselves and the relationship’s failing foundations.
The introduction of drums and bass after the second chorus seek to speed up the downward spiral. Echoes of sad voices read like ghosts in the shell. Using an electric guitar for the gut-wrenching solo sweeps in the full band. The pain of loss now at full velocity elicits tones comparable to Hayley Williams in O’Grady’s voice as she ruminates on the “box of memories” being all that remains.
All Hours may not be reinventing the wheel when it comes to songs about heartbreak, but ‘Before I Go’ is proof there’s no point fixing what isn’t broken. Their fractured hearts mirror ours, allowing us all to feel truly seen in our pain. ‘Before I Go’ and the EP Perspectives is available now across all major streaming platforms.
