What the world needs now, apart from love sweet love, is exposure to the fact that not only do bands still exist, but they also still make incredible music. With a point to prove, Shropshire metal quintet Recall The Remains have released their 5 track EP Dead Dreams.
Formed in 2017, Recall The Remains brings together Jacob Collins (vocals), Jordan Barnes (vocals/bass), Elliot Rowe (guitar) Zach Bowden (guitar/vocals), and Anthony Morris (drums) to create a behemoth which holds court in both metalcore and deathcore.
A picked guitar melody with a sprinkling of hi-hats sparks anticipation in the EPs powder keg opener ‘Darker Place’. Slathers of groove start to come together as resonant guitar slices into the song, entwining itself with reverberant bass. The introductory soft melody distorts beneath ferocious death growls. ‘In all the darkest places, I have found the strength to carry on’ speaks to the part of us which craves the encouragement to grow through our own darkness, those of us who feel the ‘fairy tales lead me astray’. The infusion of death growls barking beneath clean melodic singing gives ‘Darker Place’ the bite to its already massive bark.
‘My anger is a beacon of distrust in you’ opens the chorus to ‘First Inversion’; a sludge inspired documentation of a loved one’s fall from grace. Bleak guitars in the song’s intro replicates a predator stalking its prey through a swamp, propelling ‘First Inversion’ into a venomous confrontation of a traitor. The vocals are an exemplary instance of how multi-faceted the reaction to betrayal can be as guttural growls of bitter anger mix with higher pitched rueful screams.
This release of emotion runs rampant throughout Dead Dreams with a soundtrack of crushing riffs, pummelling drums, and solos settling in the mid frequencies which make ‘Deadlines’ a particularly cathartic moment. It’s been proven time and time again that antipathy provides a wealth of inspiration throughout metal and Recall The Remains exercise great restraint as they harness this into an EP which captures the very essence of rage.
Notes of a guitar pattering like rain against a window coupled with rolling thunderous drums conjures ‘Our Hell’’s tempestuous effigy for a descent into Hell. ‘You seek to find salvation’ calls back to a line within ‘First Inversion’; ‘I’ve fallen from grace and my salvation’s failing’, affirming the presumption of a shift in perspective from being betrayed to seeking retribution. A light ethereal interlude breaks the song with a quotation of “The Beginning” from the book of Genesis., the end of which pulls the lever on the dunk tank and plunges us into ‘Our Hell’. The pattering of guitars now resemble a rainfall of molten lava as the solo melts faces and claims souls. Hell fire and brimstone shouldn’t sound desirable, however this depiction of Hell may just persuade one or two visitors.
Armed with a plethora of decadent guitar riffs, intoxicating vocal hooks, and stalking grooves, Dead Dreams is bona fide proof that new, exciting metal can be found; you just have to be willing to look for it.
Dead Dreams is available now across all major streaming platforms and physical copies can be purchased from the band’s site. For the latest Recall The Remains news including new releases and tour dates, you can either visit their website, or follow their social medias linked below.
