PERSEIDE - 'Sell Yourself'

Thanks to our friend COVID-19, the live music scene has suffered a massive hit. Shows as we know them ceased to exist. In times like these, YouTube and other video streaming services have been a saving grace; allowing us to get just a small hit of the concert high we’ve been chasing for decades. French rock quartet Perseide uploaded a live session play through of their single ‘Sell Yourself’ and it has us jonesing for the next hit.

Originally released in 2020 and lifted from their album ‘The Only Thing’, ‘Sell Yourself’ is a commentary on our relationship with social media and how destructive it can be to us as people. Filmed at the Recordid Studio, this live version starts with a crushing guitar solo, immediately becoming the catalyst for this French foursome to unleash their pent up energy. The room turns chaotic as the fast drums kick in, but this bedlam drives ‘Sell Yourself’’s chugging guitar riff that when paired with the bass line becomes thick and heady.

Matt Bellamy inspired vocals expose just how much of ourselves we’re willing to sacrifice to be loved by the nameless faceless masses. ‘If I changed my name/ If I gave my life/ Would you love me?’ sounds as broken as our thought processes as we clamour for the validation of perfect strangers. As ‘Sell Yourself’ blossoms into its lofty sonicity; Perseide’s love for playing live again, if only to a handful of people, radiates through them, the contagious joy seeping through the screen. Teetering between heavy metal melodies and electro synths aurally personify that tipping point of falling prey to the addiction of turning yourself into a brand at the detriment of your authenticity.

When the last chord rings out, it paves the way for digital pips which begs a twofold question; have screens taken over our lives? If they have, what has been the cost? No matter the answer; when’s the next session from Perseide coming?

The original single of ‘Sell Yourself is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest news from Perseide, you can either visit their website, or follow their social media linked below.
