LAMB OF GOD - 'Lamb of God'

The 10th and self-titled album from Lamb of God is a statement in itself, even before the touch of the first heavy metallic notes. This record marks a vicious return after a 5-year hiatus since the last LP release, sporting Art Cruz as the skilful new drummer that fits seamlessly into their savage mix. This new decade for humanity has spawned an abundance of events and situations to get angry about, and a new decade for the bands self-aware, morbid and poignant commentary on the state of world we live in.

Opening with a reminder of our mortality and the records second single, ‘Memento Mori’ eases in and oozes suspense before vocalist Randy Blythe shouts ‘Wake up!’, and the welcomed familiar assault of chugging guitars and driving drums overwhelm the senses.

Gears showcases an onslaught of fierce neck-breaking riffs and is apparent throughout the entirety of the album, particularly with ‘Routes’ being a speed freaks wet dream while still exhibiting superb musicianship from every corner of the band’s members.

The only signs of slowing down are evident within the verses of ‘Bloodshot Eyes,’ however short-lived and brief that may be. The main bulk of the album consists largely of politically charged lyrics with ‘Reality Bath offering a harrowing reflection on the sadly common occurrence of shootings in America; “Another massacre, another day gone by, this is the new abnormal” and “it can’t go on like this, millions of voices echo in the darkness.”

The album also gifts to its listeners vocal guest appearances from Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta on ‘Poison Dream’ and Testaments Chuck Billy on ‘Routes’, making for a contrast of flavours that keep the records track listing fresh at every turn.

Lamb of God is a rebirth for the band, a fine-tuned mix of the classic sounds of days gone by and exhilaratingly new concepts. The self-titled album is a morbidly perfect soundtrack to 2020.
