The London-based doom metal heroines Hawxx, have unshackled the chains that no longer oppress their beast of a debut EP, Deadlands. As a quartet of unholy virtuosic musicians, bassist Iman Ahmed, drummer Jessica Dann, guitarist Hannah Staphnill, and vocalist and guitarist Anna Papadimitriou, raise the bar with dystopian guitars, acidic vocals, and battle crying bass and drums.
Decimating upon initial impact, title track ‘Deadlands’ instigates a venomous allure contrasting against the nightmarish spiral of core residing bass and engulfing guitars.
Anarchic and lawless, shrieking pinch harmonics and a sense of forbidden intimacy trickle throughout the most recent single, ‘Blunt.’ Sporadically panning ride cymbals creates a sense of pandemonium in amongst Anna’s velvet vocals.
‘Low’s’ initial tranquility ploy is thwarted by a barrage of weighty riffs and apocalyptic lyrics; “how low do we go, until we start to crawl?”, subsequently followed by masterful guitar solos and nimble drumming like hammering rain against a window.
Closing with the insurgence provoking anthem ‘Dogma,’ the lyrics “it’s a sickness to wake up, and feel like you are never enough,” act as a war cry against unrealistic body shapes and body dysphoria.
The EP departs leaving a cold metallic taste cascading toward the back of the throat, as Hawxx leave a trail of godless heavy metal demolition in their wake.
Deadlands is out now on all streaming platforms.
